We welcomed back both returning and new students with the start of school on August 17. The extensive construction will likely create some gridlock, but the beautification of campus continues. In AIM, we are excited about the new infusion of faculty talent into our ranks.

Amanda D. Warren joined AIM in fall of 2016 after working as an assurance manager in the Atlanta office of PwC, specializing in the asset management and real estate industries.

Somer Chyz joined AIM full-time in the fall 2016 following a career as an attorney. She received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University and her juris doctor from the University of Richmond.

Faculty Promotion

James A. Chyz was promoted to associate professor of Accounting in the Haslam College of Business Department of Accounting and Information Management (AIM) in August 2016.

Cathy Russell, who has been a mainstay of our office staff for 27 years, will be retiring at the end of December 2016. Russell started at AIM in September 1989, after working for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Army ROTC office for five years.

Ph.D. News

New Ph.D. Students

Fellipe Gomes Raymundo is a first-year Ph.D. student with research interests in financial accounting, capital markets and corporate governance. He earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from IBMEC in Brazil and his master’s degree in economics from the University of Arkansas.
Andrew Doucet is an incoming first-year doctoral student with research interests in financial reporting, earnings management and corporate governance. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s of accounting degrees at the University of Arkansas. Prior to starting the doctoral program, Doucet interned in PwC’s assurance service line at the Fayetteville, Ark., office.

Sept. 23
“Take 6” Class Reunion
On Friday, Sept. 23, the evening before Accounting Day, we are hosting our third alumni reunion event at Club LeConte for alumni who graduated in a year ending in “6.” Dan Murphy is organizing this event for AIM, and save the date cards have already been sent.
Sept. 24
Accounting Day
The 41st annual Warren Slagle Accounting Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24. Please put this on your calendar and join us. Our guest speaker is Jimmy Cheek, outgoing chancellor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Chancellor Cheek will discuss the great strides UT has made, as well as look to the future. Within a year of taking office, the chancellor set a goal for the university to become a Top 25 public research university within a decade.
